Following a recent child pornography scandal, Tumblr announced that on Dec. 17 it's removing all 'adult content' from its platform — including what it refers to as 'female presenting' nipples.
We're not exactly sure what 'female presenting' nipples are (our top scientists are working on it right now), or why they would be lumped in with something as horrific as child porn, but as Tumblr's dumpster fire continues to burn we do have a solution intended for this situation exactly: The TaTa Top.
The TaTa Top is a flesh-toned bikini top that gives the ~illusion~ of toplessness by depicting 'male presenting' nipples, thus keeping us all safe from any type of other, more sinister-presenting nipple. It was created in Chicago in 2014 to highlight (and troll) the city's 'indecent exposure' ordinance, which bans the 'female breast' — aka women's toplessness.
This is noteworthy because the city of Chicago is also currently being sued by a performance artist who also happens to be a transgender woman. She's challenging the city to not only defend, but define, what it means by 'female' breast, and how exactly it's going to make folks safer to cover them.
The TaTa Top tips these laws and social media bans on their heads (and $3 from each top goes to breast cancer and women's health organizations) while trolling censorship and antiquated topless bans, de-sexualizing breasts and actually supporting a good cause, rather than shaming and further stigmatizing 'female presenting' bodies.
